Liposuction

Liposuction

Most of us know how frustrating those exercise resistant fat cells in the stomach, thighs, hips and arms can be. For those who are healthy, who exercise regularly, but just can’t seem to get rid of that extra fat–liposuction is a viable cosmetic surgery option. Liposuction improves the appearance of body areas that have concentrated amounts of visible fat. Through a vacuum-like process, the fat is removed, creating a smoother, more attractive body contour and a better self image. Various liposuction methods include the standard tumescent technique, ultrasound-assisted (UAL), and the most recent variations of liposuction including Liposelection and SmartLipo. With all the varieties of lipo available out there, not to mention all of the non-surgical cellulite removal treatments (Mesotherapy, VelaSmooth, and Endermologie to name a few), it’s hard to know where to begin. That’s where a consultation with a certified liposuction surgeon comes into play. Every surgeon has his or her own favorite technique of liposuction based on the results they’ve had with their patients, but most importantly, based on each patient’s unique case. Any reputable surgeon should be able to explain their liposuction technique clearly and thoroughly enough to give you all the information you need to feel confident in your decision.

Surgical Lipo Techniques:

Feather Touch LipoElectionTM– Dr Tejinder Bhatti’s trademark Liposuction technique is a mix of the best points of smartlipo, Tumescent Lipo & LipoSelection.

LipoSelection®– This form of lipo is exclusive to the Vaser System which uses ultrasonic energy to dissolve fat cells for a speedier recovery period with less discomfort. Through ultrasonic energy, LipoSelection leaves surrounding tissue, nerves and blood vessels virtually intact.

Ultrasound Assisted Lipo (UAL) -While theoretically the same liposuction technique as LipoSelection, general ultrasonic methods do not utilize the Vaser System. Fat cells are broken down and liquified through ultrasonic engergy (sound waves) that are emitted at the top of the canula.

SmartLipo™- Involves laser-assisted fat removal through a small canula with an Nd:Yag laser placed inside. SmartLipo is used to firm up localized areas of fat, while also tightening the skin. Popular places for SmartLipo include the chin, waist, upper arms, inner/outer thighs. This liposuction can also be performed without general anesthesia.

Tumescent Lipo- The oldest version of liposuction being utilized today, tumescent lipo is by no means obsolete. Many doctors still refer to it as the tried and true method of liposuction and their preference when it comes to treating the majority of their patients. Better technology has allowed for this standard suction technique to deliver proven results with little downtime, scarring or complications; however, your results will depend on the skill and precision of your surgeon.

FAQs

As more women and men want to look and feel better about themselves, body contouring and lipo-sculpture continue to grow in popularity making liposuction the most popular surgery performed today.

Is liposuction a surgery?

Liposuction is most definitely surgery, but it is less invasive than procedures such as tummy tucks and face lifts. It may also have a faster recovery and a lower complication rate than most other surgical procedures.

What is liposuction?

The concept of liposuction is surprisingly simple. It is a surgical technique that improves the body’s contour by removing excess fat deposits located between the skin and muscle.

Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

A good candidate for liposuction is defined as any person who has realistic expectations, is in good health and is likely to be happy with the results of liposuction. Although liposuction can often provide very substantial improvements.

Which body areas can be treated by liposuction?

In men who comprise about 15% to 25% of liposuction patients. The most commonly treated areas include the chin and neck area, abdomen flanks (love handles) and breasts.

What is the safest form of liposuction? What is liposuction cannula?

Tumescent liposuction is totally by local anaesthesia, is the safest form. Liposuction using general anaesthesia and heavy sedation is somewhat less safe. Microcannulas permit smoother results. A cannula is a small stainless steel tube that is inserted through an incision in the skin to remove subcutaneous fat.

How long does a normal liposuction surgery take?

When liposuction is done totally by local anaesthesia patients can usually depart from the surgical facility within 30 minutes of the completion of the surgery. When using general anaesthesia then the patient usually requires 1 to 3 hours post anaesthesia observation before being discharged.

Is there pain or discomfort during liposuction surgery?

During the 2 days immediately after the liposuction surgery the amount of pain experienced depends on the type of anaesthesia used. Soreness is usually the most intense 2 to 4 days after the surgery and then decreases steadily.

How does liposuction affect the appearance of the skin? Are there visible scars?

The appearance of the skin after liposuction depends upon the skin’s elasticity. Skin with good elasticity should look smooth and natural after liposuction. Scars are not a common problem with modern liposuction, which uses very small cannulas, thus a very small incision is required.

Is liposuction a reasonable treatment for obesity?

Liposuction is not a good treatment for obesity. It is not effective, even as a last resort for people who are unable to lose weight by dieting and exercise.

Does liposuction always remove ‘cellulite'?

Liposuction improves the silhouette of the body, but does not necessarily eliminate the pre existing subtle ‘puckering’ of the skin that is often referred to as cellulite. Liposuction does reduce the degree of cellulite to a minor extent.

Does liposuction produce permanent results?

After liposuction the body shape is more or less permanent. If a patient does gain a moderate amount of weight after liposuction then the figure will simply be a larger version of the new body shape. Fat cells do not grow back. Of course the ageing process does not stop.

Does the fat come back in other spots after liposuction?

If a patient does not gain weight after the surgery, then the weight does not accumulate in other areas of the body. The maximum amount that can be removed safely is probably 6 to 8 pounds(3 to 4 litres). The greater the volume of fat removed in a single day the greater the risk of complications.

Do you have to wear ‘compression garments’?

A compression garment is worn over the treated areas for up to 6 weeks depending on the amount of fat removed and the elasticity of the skin. This helps the body to conform to the new contours. It is not visible under clothing.

Is hospitalization required?

No, usually all procedures are performed in a fully equipped day surgery facility. The patient is able to go home the same day.

What are the different liposuction techniques?

The 4 most commonly used liposuction techniques are:

  • Tumescent technique:- in this liposuction technique a large amount of saline fluid is utilized to loosen fat tissue from muscle for easier fat removal.
  • Ultrasound associated liposuction:- also known as ultrasonic liposuction or UAL, uses ultrasonic energy to break up fat prior to removal.
  • Lipo selection:- is a type of ultrasound assisted liposuction in which grooved probes and a specialized cannula are used.
  • Power assisted liposuction:- PAL is a type of tumescent liposuction which involves a vibrating cannula. This powered cannula breaks up fat quickly for easier suction.

The cannula may be connected to a device that generates high vacuum pressure, or to a special syringe. The unwanted fat deposits, which prior to this process were treated with injections of a special liquid (saline solution combined with local anesthesia and a vasoconstrictor), are removed from under your skin through the cannula by suction. This liquid generates the adequate conditions for the extraction of fat. The cannula is moved under the skin to reach all the desired areas. As these waves cause the fat cells to rupture and the fat is liquefied, its removal becomes much easier.
